Dear Supporters:

Thank you so very much for participating in Dine-A-Round. We raised over $13,000 to support innovation and excellence in the Croton-Harmon Schools.

Our next big fundraiser, Under the Stars, will take place on Saturday, May 19^th at Monteverde at Oldstone Manor. Under the Stars is made possible with the generous support of individuals and businesses throughout the community – and with the efforts of numerous volunteers. There are many opportunities – big and small to get involved!

If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities for Under the Stars please join us for an informal gathering on Thursday, Feb 9^th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the Ottinger Room at the Croton Free Library. Representatives from the CHEF board will be available to tell you about helping out with this great event.

We need volunteers from all areas of expertise including, but not limited to, marketing, sales, food and beverage services, artists, designers, schleppers, and much much more.

DEC chief says budget plan lacks funding for new regulatory personnel

ALBANY — Tuesday’s joint legislative hearing on Gov. Andrew Cuomo‘s state budget proposal devoted a considerable amount of time to a subject that goes virtually unmentioned in its pages: hydraulic fracturing.

State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens told lawmakers his agency still had months of work to complete before it would even be possible to issue a limited number of permits for the controversial natural gas drilling technique.

The proposed budget includes no allocation for the additional DEC staff — in numbers still to be determined — required to oversee the process, which is seen as a strong sign that the technique won’t be allowed in New York anytime in 2012, and likely not in the coming fiscal year that ends March 31, 2013.

While Martens said ultimate approval of the process was not a “fait accompli,” he reiterated his personal belief that hydrofracking can be done safely with robust regulation and enforcement.

DEC’s most immediate tasks include sorting through more than 60,000 comments sent in response to the latest draft of its environmental impact statement, which could eventually provide the framework for the regulation of hydrofracking in New York. About 60 workers are currently classifying the material.

Hydrofracking uses large amounts of water mixed with chemicals to fracture gas-bearing shale formations deep underground. The Marcellus shale, which extends into the western part of the state, has been described as one of the nation’s richest untapped gas reserves. While the industry claims the process is safe, environmental groups say otherwise, and have accused public officials of moving too quickly toward allowing it.

“We’re not rushing,” Martens told reporters after his testimony. “We can only do what we can do with the staff we have, and we’re trying to be as systematic as possible about the whole process. And I try not to let the noise about whether we’re going to slow or too fast affect the work we do.”

Environmental Advocates of New York accepted Martens’ assurance there were no funds for fracking, and said it was “especially pleased to hear that resources would not be transferred from other agencies to the DEC to accelerate permitting,” said Katherine Nadeau, the group’s water and natural resources program director.

The agency was praised by legislators on both sides of the aisle for its work on flood recovery following last fall’s tropical storms.

Well folks… It’s official. Treasures & Tales is moving.

There’s much to say, and none of it would suffice…The other day I was given notice to vacate, and after fundemplating (made that word up) for a couple days, I decided to stay here in Croton if possible. It sucks having to move from our home of the last 2 1/2 years. But I know that what lies ahead will be truly magical. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

Our last official day at 139 Grand Street will be Saturday, February 25th. On which day, we’ll be hosting an open-house, Moving On Party - details to follow. I’m taking this opportunity to refine, re-define, re-group & re-coup, and we will
be taking TnT to the next level. Treasures & Tales will become as much about the experience as it is about theshopping.In the meantime, we are having a:

Margaret Anne Robinson (1929 – 2012)

Margaret Anne Robinson (née Di Crocco) of Croton-on-Hudson, NY passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2012.

Margaret was born on June 26, 1929 in Staten Island, NY to James Vincent and Emily (Dowling) Di Crocco. In 1960 she married Elton Seydel Robinson in New York City, where they lived until moving to Croton-on-Hudson in 1962.

She studied painting and drawing for two years at the Villa Schifanoia, Florence, Italy, with teachers from the Accademia delle Belle Arti and acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York, NY. Margaret was a Copy Editor at American Heritage Books, an Interpreter at Van Cortlandt Manor (Sleepy Hollow Restorations, now Historic Hudson Valley), and did free lance copy-editing for Art in America and other publications. Returning to painting in her 60s, she earned certification in Botanical Art and Illustration at the New York Botanical Garden in 1993. She participated regularly in juried botanical exhibitions and group shows around the United States as a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists including a solo exhibit at the New York Botanical Gardens in 1999. She also exhibited regularly in local shows in Croton and other Westchester venues, and was a published Botanical Illustrator and member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (New York chapter). In her community, she and her husband worked with the Croton Shakespeare Festival for multiple seasons including as co-chairs in 1979, and she was an active parishioner at Holy Name of Mary Church where she served for many years as a Lector.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 51 years, Elton Seydel Robinson of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and 3 children, Anne Armour (Gordon) of New Haven, CT, Tim Robinson (Marguerite) of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Michael Robinson (Aimee Berg) of New York, NY, and 5 grandchildren, Tobias, Charlotte, and Robinson Armour of New Haven, CT, and Wyatt and Luke Robinson of Croton-on-Hudson, NY. She is also survived by her nephew Lt. Colonel James V. Di Crocco III (Katherine) of Carlisle, PA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Holy Name of Mary Church, 110 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery also in Croton.
