Massive Gas Pipelines and Converter Stations in our Backyard?

April 29, 2014

Courtesy of Friends Of Seth Freach:

Did you know that there are currently 2 big energy projects being planned right in our backyard? Did you also know that there is a Public Hearing scheduled tomorrow where residents can state their concerns, on the record?

  • One project would require drilling a horizontal bore hole under the Hudson River in order to install 42″ diameter pipes to carry high pressure fracked natural gas through Cortlandt!
  • The other would build a 1000 megawatt electrical conversion station in a residential community that would be twice the size of a department store. A station that would buzz and hum constantly, 24/7 as it converted High Voltage DC electricity carried to it from a transmission line laid on the bottom of the Hudson River!

The worst part? Both projects are being planned and developed by separate corporations, independently of one another, with each planning to be built at the exact same location in Cortlandt!

1000MW of high voltage electricity on top of high pressure gas pipelines… What could be worse, you might ask? Well, unfortunately, it does get worse. The site being planned for these two projects is right next to the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.

I, along with the rest of the Cortlandt Town Board, strongly oppose these projects. These projects would be located in residential areas, in close proximity to over 6,000 residential properties. These projects would decimate property values and be a security risk too high for our community to bear. Please stand with us in opposition.

Some Background:
The gas pipeline project is known as the AIM Project and is being planned by Algonquin Gas Transmission, LLC, which is a subsidiary of Spectra Energy Partners. The AIM Project will seek to increase existing gas compressor stations and install new pipelines (42″ in diameter) along a 38 mile stretch through New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. This is an interstate project which will be reviewed on the federal level by FERC.

The HVDC project is being proposed by West Point Partners, LLC. (This company has no relation whatsoever to the military academy.) It seeks to run a 1000MW high voltage cable down the Hudson River, from Athens, NY to Cortlandt. Once in Cortlandt, the plan is to build a massive converter station to convert the DC to AC. The converter station property will have a footprint the size of a football field, be taller than any other building in the Town of Cortlandt, and be right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. This is an intrastate project which will be reviewed the NYS PSC.

What You Can Do:

  1. Sign the petition demanding that West Point Partners, LLC provide alternative converter station sites for consideration.
  2. Forward this email to your friends. Awareness in our community is crucial.
  3. Attend one of the PSC Public Hearings tomorrowApril 30th at the Muriel H. Morabito Center on 29 Westbrook Drive, Cortlandt Manor, NY 10567. This is a Public Hearing of the PSC on the HVDC project (West Point Partners, LLC). There are public hearings taking place at 2:30pm and 6:00pm where you can both speak your concerns for the record on this project and hear others’ as well. (Public comment time is scheduled to begin one hour into each sessions’ program, at 3:30pm and 7:00pm respectively.)
