What’s Up With 1300 Albany Post Road?

August 10, 2014

For those who have asked, WatchCroton is happy to share all the information it has been able to find on this property being gifted to the Village of Croton by former resident Laurel Gouveia.  There have been multiple postings on other sites of a FOIL’ed request regarding emails from Barbara Sarbin of Something Good In The World who had been in touch with Ms. Gouveia prior to Ms. Gouviea’s death and had received permission to put plantings on the property for a possible Childrens’ Peaceful Garden, formerly located at Hilltop Hanover Farm.  Ms. Sarbin may be looking for a site for an Education Center as well.  WatchCroton is aware of a FOIL request pending that will remedy the current situation of only the emails from Ms. Sarbin to Village officials being public.  WatchCroton is looking forward to seeing both sides of the conversation and is also hoping that Ms. Gouviea’s will, ostensibly a public document, will soon make an appearance, perhaps on the Village website.

As to the near-constant refrain of the property going off the property tax rolls, depriving the village and the school district of funding, it may well be that the Village of Croton is one of a long line of organizations that the property has been willed to and in our opinion the Village has made a prudent choice to explore the various uses the property can afford the Village.  A similar decision had to be made decades back when what is now Croton Landing was made available to the Village.

Please click on the links below for more information.

Laurel Gouveia’s lawyer submitted a term sheet for the possible gift of the property in the event of Ms. Gouveia’s demise.

The Village Board adopts a resolution to consider accepting the gift.

The Village issues a document on the proposed gift.

Laurel Gouviea passes away.

Ms. Gouviea’s step-daughter remembers her stepmother.

I’d like to READ fact based comments relative to possible uses use from the Citizens United candidates assuming the Village representatives choose to accept the gift. It would be helpful to be able to read and digest their definitive thoughts about its value and its possible future uses any substantiated factual reasons for refusing the gift.

Nope Mrs. Bruno … not the prepared documents and statements so much as the candidates (both Democrats and Croton United) – Only by reading their personal statements about what they believe and where they might envision the future of this gift to do for or against Croton. Most of us have already read the official documents but its more the interpretation of this documents that make me uncomfortable. The official documents have been made available and discussed at many board meetings so your suggestion probably will not shed any addition pertinent information. Thanks for the suggestion though.
