Considering the Arts # 8

A Conversation with Claire Collins about the Theremin
and Other Exotic Musical Instruments

When: Sunday, November 6, 2016, 2 pm
Where: Symphony Knoll, 15 Mt Airy Rd, Croton-on-Hudson, NY
Cost: Free & Public is Invited

Claire will talk about the theremin and some other exotic instruments, how they are unusual, and what’s intriguing about them.  Claire will play and you can too.

The theremin, the precursor of electronic music, is capable of the eerie and the endearing, simple but difficult. A briefly mass-produced version was owned and played by Charlie Chaplin, Edward Everett Horton, Harpo Marx, Leopold Stokowski, and more.(http://www.rcatheremin.com/).

Claire teaches voice and piano at the Bennett Conservatory in Croton, and is Assistant Conductor of the Croton Chorale and a member of the CCoA Board.

Speaking of the Croton Chorale, it will be performing on November 5th at 8:00 pm at Asbury Methodist Church, 17 Old Post Road South, Croton, with a most apropos program including Haydn’s “Mass in Time of Anguish.”

Still in October: Here are some arts events in October that we didn’t tell you about yet.

Hudson Stage Company (click link for tickets and information)  performances of “YOU WILL REMEMBER ME” by Francois Archambault (translated by Bobby Theodore) continue through October 29 in Armonk.

The Ossining Arts Council is offering a small group experience: “The Pros and Cons of Aging Gracefully” with artist, art historian, and performaance artist Marcy B. Freedman.  In preparing for a 2017 performance piece, 66-year old Marcy is doing research in discussion sessions “with women of a certain age.”  This one is on Sunday, October 30, from 2 – 4 pm at the Steamer Fire House Gallery (2nd floor).  “Private” sessions are free but limited to 12 participants.  Contact Marcy (mbf@bestweb.net) to request a spot.
