Sweet, spicy, scorching – pick your pepper.
What To Look For
Planning on picking up some peppers? You’ll have lots to choose from. Sweet peppers come in a variety of colors and sizes, but if we count chili peppers too, the number of options world-wide jumps to the thousands. Maybe this is because hot peppers have found a place at the heart of food traditions in many many cultures. It may be surprising then to find out that peppers (they’re all related – green, purple, sweet, spicy) originated in Mexico and didn’t get as far as Asia until the mid-1500s. Imagine Indian food without its fiery chilis! That strong flavor is what led Europeans to associate the fruit with peppercorns, hence the name “peppers,” though the two plants are not related. The wide variety of pepper colors is a result of both breeding and the stage of the pepper’s ripeness. For example, red bell peppers are simply ripe green bell peppers.
Sunset View Farm will have fresh pasture raised chicken (whole birds & pieces), as well as fresh lamb. They’ll also offer hot dogs made from their farm-raised beef and pork on sale for $2 off a pack. Want a deal on a farm raised turkey for Thanksgiving? Pre-order from Sunset View Farm by the end of September for the best price of the season. $50 deposit required; ask at their stand for more details. This week Dr. Pickle introduces artichoke quarters marinated in olive oil with garlic and spices. Use them for pizza, salads and more!
What We’re Thinking About
Shop Your Values

Peter Endriss, the head baker at Runner & Stone, wrote a letter to his customers at the Park Slope Farmers Market that resonates with us as a call to action for everyone who is navigating the newly complex landscape of food purchasing choices. This week we share that letter and ask you to help insure a future for small farms and food artisans in New York: forward this email and invite a friend to the farmer’ market.    MORE
